OUR NEXT EVENT:

Tuesday October 22nd 7:30pm at the Perranwell Centre
‘A Guiding Stitch’

Cornish Samplers, Female Education and Storytelling 1815 to 1915
Speaker: Vicky Aimers MA ; artist , illustrator and textile historian
Sets and Spells
Vicky has an interest in textile history and the ‘Invisible Women’ behind the needlework and their stories. Her illustrated talk will be about female needlework education and the darning samplers that were produced which is now the focus of her PhD.

One of the stories that Vicky is still researching comes from a darning sampler found in the Royal Cornwall Museum made by Margaret Lanyon (born 1861). This story involves so many twists and turns including her husband’s wrestling career (John Pearce), farming, prehistoric stones, typhoid, and trips to America.

There will be a small practical exercise to do during the talk, for anyone who wants to do it - all about mending.

We do hope that you can join us to hear an expert talk about this fascinating topic.

Who are we?

The Perranarworthal Local History Group (PLHG) was formed by a group of local people who shared a common interest in finding out more about the history and origins of the place they lived in and the surrounding area. The PLHG committee was established in May 2017 and began to organise meetings, and arrange walks and talks on subjects of interest. There is now a regular programme of events for people to enjoy and we encourage everyone to participate and contribute to furthering our aims.

What are our Aims and Objectives?

…to appreciate, investigate, study, research, record promote and protect the archaeology and history of Perran-ar-worthal.
