APR 2022New Book!
The Perran-ar-worthal Local History Group are re-starting with a ‘soft’ opening on Sunday afternoon 24th April at 2.30pm. We will base ourselves in the West Room at the Perranwell Centre, but the idea is to launch Chris Burton’s new book entitled ‘PERRANWELL SELF-GUIDED WALK’ over a coffee and a chat, with an update on our work, followed by a short walk based on Chris’s new book for those who would like to join us. Your ideas for future events are most welcome.As this is the first meeting for over 2 years it will be free and open to all. If things go to plan we hope to revert to our usual weekday evening meetings starting with an AGM and a speaker at the end of May.
Both Chris’s books will be on sale at this event for those who wish to buy them.

JAN 2020SMUGGLING
Once again there was a full house for the PLHG January meeting. The speaker was Mark Camp, a local Blue badge Guide, whose topic was “Smuggling , Fact or Fiction”
Mark talked of his involvement with Tony Robinson of “The walking through History” TV programme. Through this Mark started investigating the smuggling history of Cornwall.

OCT 2019WHAT'S IN A CRACK?
This was an unusual title and an unusual topic for the meeting of Local History Group on Oct 8th, but accredited conservator and restorer of paintings, Sarah Cove, was able to explain how the cracks in paintings reveal the history of the art work and the development of new materials and styles. She used examples of the Newlyn painters like Stanhope Forbes to illustrate her talk.

JULY 2019HISTORY ROADSHOW
The drop in session at the pub on Friday 5th July was well attended and people had an opportunity to share pictures and artefacts, talk about past events in the village and to interrogate the Historic Cornwall website (historic-cornwall.org.uk ) . Chris Burton also spoke about the history of one of the older houses in the village, Tullimaar, which was the home of William Golding author of Lord of the Flies. Thanks to Tim and Lizzie at the Royal Oak for hosting this event.
JUNE 2019TIME WALK THROUGH PERRANWELL
On a pleasant summer evening, 54 villagers and others from the surrounding area enjoyed a leisurely stroll around Perranwell looking at points of interest. The walk was researched and lead by Ruth Ward and Carrie Langford of the local history group.
APRIL 2019THE ENYS FAMILY
Terry Chapman, a local historian spoke to a packed house of the Perran-ar-worthal Local History Group on 30th April 2019 about the Enys family of Penryn. He has spent some time working on the Enys family archives which are now accessible via the website: enysfamilyarchive.com and will also reside at the Cornwall Records Office.Read more...
MARCH 2019100 FACES, 100 STORIES

FEB 2019PEOPLE AND PLACES THAT MAKE LOCAL HISTORY
Carole Vivian, Chair of the Cornwall Association of Local Historians,has extensively researched her local area, focusing in particular on Trelawne House & the surrounding area. Built circa 1450 it became the home of the Trelawney family.Carole explained how she used different research archives to find her information.Read more...
